Imagine walking into a restaurant and being greeted by name. The staff and the patrons feel like friends. In the winter, there’s a table of long-time friends having dinner by the fireplace. In the summer, there’s a family with three generations enjoying the nice weather on the huge deck. And it’s not overlooking a parking lot. It’s overlooking the 18th hole at Val Halla Golf Course in Cumberland. That’s the feeling of community you get at Rachel’s On The Green, THE People Place. Come by and find out why we’re the friendliest place for golfers and non-golfers alike.
Established in 2011 at the former Viking Grill at Val Halla, brothers Mike and Bubba Smith started on the journey of turning a seasonal pub into a year-round restaurant. With Mike in the kitchen and his sister Patty taking care of the front room, all they needed was someone to manage the bar. Enter Celeste Ross with a wealth of bartending experience in very busy venues.
Five years later, Bubba sold his share to Patty and Celeste and, along with Mike, the three continue to run the restaurant today. We have added Joe Ohlund, who’s nightly specials are something to look forward to, using freshly sourced ingredients with a flair for something different. And the dining room staff, along with weekend bartender Sarah Luce, keep to the philosophy that there’s a smile waiting for everyone who enters.
As you would expect, summertime is the busiest at Rachel’s, with golfers sharing friendly heckling while enjoying the beautiful deck. On Sundays there’s live music. And it’s partially covered, so you can either sit in the sun or the shade.
In the winter, you can continue to enjoy Rachel’s fare while golfing at the Tee Box, literally attached to the restaurant. In the summer, the Tee Box turns into a function venue for golf outings.
Sunday Brunch is a popular feature offered year-round from 8 am to noon weekly. In the winter, you can make it a day at Rachel’s by staying for the Patriots Pizza buffet, offered for all 1 and 4 pm games. Thursdays are one of the week’s busiest, no matter the time of year, with the Baxter Scramble starting in the spring and running throughout the golf season and the now-famous Rachel’s Trivia happening when the golf course isn’t open. Come early for Trivia. The 100-seat restaurant regularly is SRO on this popular night.
So whether you’re looking for a family dinner out or a drink with a friend, we have what you’re looking for. And you will have fun. That’s a promise.
